Beschreibung in Gaël's Worten:

Harmony is perhaps the broadest and most powerful aspect of music, and this is perhaps even more true in a cappella vocal improvisation. Some harmonies can be physically unpleasant, while others seem to vibrate the innermost part of our being. Changing a single note by a semitone can completely transform an atmosphere. More than timbre, volume, rhythm or melody, harmony plays on our emotions. How do we play with harmony?

Accessible even without theoretical knowledge, without training in music theory and without instrumental practice, this workshop offers work on the basics of harmony. We explore the seven modes and chords from the major scale (which already offers tons of possibilities), through solo improvisation, pattern harmonization, simple and enriched chord progression. The goal of the workshop is to give every participant clear and efficient tools that help to improvise beautiful harmonies and to develop consciousness and skills in order to explore more complexity if desired.

This workshop is aimed at relatively experienced singers, with a good sense of rhythm and an already trained ear (more details about prerequisites in the practical information below).

This work applies to both circlesong and co-improvisation.

Prerequisite:

RHYTHM:

- easily feel and hold a steady pulse while singing,

- easily feel and hold a bar in 3 or 4 beats while singing,

- be able to sing off-beats (at least up to 100bpm).

EAR:

- be able to sing and easily recognize a unison or octave,

- hear and be able to sing the seven notes of the scale induced by simple chords in major or minor,

- hold your voice in the middle of a polyphony.

VOCAL TECHNIQUE:

- sing in tune overall,

- be able to sing at low and high volumes,

- be able to change the timbre of your voice to adapt to other voices.

EXPERIENCE:

- no improvisation experience required.

THEORY:

- no theoretical knowledge required, other than understanding the above concepts.

Gaël Aubrit fell in love with vocal improvisation and circlesongs through discovering Bobby Mcferrin in 2010. Since then, he dedicates most of his life to spreading and refining this particular art form. He graduated first from the ENM Villeurbanne with a State certificate in musical studies (DEM) in singing, he then became a certified vocal technique teacher of Allan Wright's "Le Chanteur Moderne". In the meantime, he joined the teachers team in Bobby McFerrin's annual Circlesongs school in the US. He teaches in many different places: music schools and artistic centers, in France and abroad, and to professionals as well as amateurs.
