Improving Rhythm

According to many great musicians, rhythm is the foundation of music. Whatever the musical style, rhythm is (almost) always present. Whether acrobatic or extremely simple, the quality of rhythmic placement not only makes us want to dance, but also deeply supports all the other dimensions of a musical work.

This workshop offers a variety of exercises and practice sessions to help you improve your timing, feel rhythm more deeply in your body, and develop greater rhythmic agility. There is no written repertoire: rhythm is explored here through a cappella vocal improvisation. However, this is not a circlesong workshop, nor a co-improvisation workshop, but a rhythm-focused training, using different structured formats specifically designed to support this learning process.

The program includes: grounding and stability, even and odd meters, binary and ternary feels, polymeter, interlocking patterns, unusual rhythmic placements, and fast, complex rhythms. Little theory, lots of practice!
